As she waits for her daughter to return, a mother chain-smokes through the day and takes out her anguish on the household staff rather than face her own pain.

A tightly wound Lebanese character study of a mother's cruelty, avoidance and quiet pain, presented by The New Yorker.

A mother who is awaiting the return of her daughter spends the day smoking and tormenting the household staff so as not to face her pain.
